A Wrinkle In Time 2: Global Sync Shoot #2

Photographed at Lake Cave, in the Margaret River region of Western Australia
at 3.00pm on Saturday 21st March
for Global Synchronous Shoot #2 of A Wrinkle In Time 2.

Location Notes: Lake Cave is a small but spectacular cave in the Margaret River region, in the extreme SW corner of Western Australia. This region is best known internationally for its wineries, but is also famous for the quality of its surfing beaches, tall timber forests and caves. A doline is the remains of a cave chamber after it has collapsed. Large karri trees in this doline at the entrance to Lake Cave indicate that this part of the cave collapsed some 500 years ago. The local rock is a limestone sand, [the crossbedding can be seen in the walls of the doline], rather than the more usual coral reef. It is theorised that this is the reason for the prolific number of "straws" found in these caves. A nearby cave has a straw over 6 metres long.

Shoot Notes:
This pano was shot about 2/3rds of the way down the 330 steps into the cave, which is 76 metres deep. The limestone walls are blackened by dirt, fire, and tannin from the trees. Above, you can just see the first viewing platform inside the doline. Below, you can see where the rest of the steps descend to the cave entrance proper. Thousands of box spiders live on the walls in dense white webs, seen as small white patches on the blackened areas. Now and again a snake or kangaroo falls into the doline, but this usually doesn't present too much of a problem for the tourists.

Acknowledgements: Many thanks to CaveWorks for their permission to shoot within the area, and for the assistance and support of the cave guides during the shoot. Thanks also to Robert Frith of Acorn Photgraphics, for the generous loan of his rectilinear lens for the weekend.

Technical details:
Shot on a Canon EOS 620 using Kodacolor Gold III 400 ASA film and a 17-35mm rectilinear zoom lens set at 24mm. Camera attached to a custom pano head on a Manfrotto Triminor tripod.
