| Rockin' the Wave Photographed at Wave Rock, near Hyden in Western Australia at 11.00 am local time on Friday 20th March. The Global Wave Shoot Around the world, more than 100 other panographers also shot panoramas at 11am this date, so a tsunami of creativity and involvement passed around the earth, starting on the east coast of Australia and ending up in Hawaii. We thought it only fitting to begin our Wrinkle In Time 2 Odyssey by shooting our Global Wave Panorama at Wave Rock. Location Notes: Wave Rock is part of a granite monolith near the arid wheat belt town of Hyden. [Elevation 302m ASL, annual rainfall 325 mm, pop 500]. The process of weathering has left a 15 m high wave shape hollowed out of one face of the rock, with coloured streaks down the face of the wave. This site is a famous landmark, and many tourists make the 350km trek east of Perth to see it. There are a number of other scenic formations at other points around the monolith. We took the time to visit one of them, Hippo's Yawn. Shoot Notes: We set our three sons up to 'surf' the wave, planning to photograph them at two separate points of the panorama, but the granite rock surface heated up very quickly, so they surfed with bare feet at one end at 10.55am and had to scamper off and put sandals on to shoot at the other end at 11.05am. As is common in most parts of the Australian bush, there were flies about, but luckily, none landed on the lens. [This has happened before!] We recorded the ambient sounds on our video recorder. The weather was hot and clear [about 32 degrees C], with a lazy breeze idling through the scrub, crows cawing, and kids talking. A fly zoomed the camcorder. We hope to include the sound in the ambient file we will ultimately add to this page. The fabulous weather left us little prepared for the storms we were about to drive into on our way south to photograph our next Wrinkle in Time 2 panorama, at the Valley of the Giants at 6am the next morning. Technical details: Canon EOS 620 with Kodacolor Gold III 400 ASA. 17-35mm rectilinear zoom lens set at 20 mm. Aperture f13, auto exposure 1/60 to 1/500 sec. It all sat on a custom-built panorama head on a Manfrotto Triminor tripod. |
